England is the largest and the richest county of Great Britain. London is the capital of England, the capital of Great Britain and of the UK. It is the city in Europe and one of the oldest cities in the world. London is famous for its places of interest such as the British Museum the Tower of London, the National Gallery, Buckingham Palace, Nelson’s Column and others. London consists of four parts: the West End, the East End, the City and Westminster. The City is the financial and the business center of the country. There are many banks and various offices here. Westminster is the administrative center of London. The Houses of Parliament are situated here. The building is very beautiful with its two towers and big clock called Big Ben (A clock of the Queen Elizabeth II). Westminster Abbey is situated opposite the Houses of Parliament. The West End is the richest part of London with fine houses, wide streets, parks, concert halls, fashionable shops and restaurants, famous museums and theatres. The East End is the industrial part of London. It includes the port, the docks, plants and factories.

Scotland is à county in the north îf Great Britain. It is à part of the United Kingdom.

Scotland is divided into three natural regions: the Southern Uplands, the Central Lowlands and the Highlands and islands. À lot of places in Scotland are à natural paradise, still untouched by man.

The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh, well known for its castle. Edinburgh, the country's capital and second largest city, is one of Europe's largest financial centres. Scotland's largest city is Glasgow, which is the centre of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Scottish waters consist of a large sectorof the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union

Wales is the county in the west of Great Britain. It is mainly à mountainous land with à chiefly agricultural economy and an industrial and coal-mining area in the south. The landscape is beautiful. Many English people move to Wales when they retire.

Cardiff, à large city in the south, was chosen as the capital of Wales in 1955, mainly because of its size. Since 1536, Wales has been governed by England and the heir to the throne of England has the title of Prince of Wales, but Welsh people have strong sense of identity. Welsh is an ancient Celtic language, similar to Breton, spoken in Brittany, France. In the 60's Welsh was given equal status with English as an official language and is used in the law courts. It is taught in school and some TV program are broadcast in Welsh. However, only about 20% îf the population speaks Welsh.

Northern Ireland, also known as Ulster, is still à part of the United Kingdom. It is made up of six counties: Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry, Òórone. One third of the population lives in and around the capital, Belfast. Belfast is also the most important port and commercial and industrial centre. Some parts of the territory, those that are not close to the capital, have remained mainly rural.

Northern Ireland has à strong cultural tradition: songs, dances, literature and festivals.

It has its own Art Council, and there are orchestras, theatres, ballet and opera companies.
