MODULES B and C SEMESTER 6 January–June

TOPIC: THE LITERATURE FROM THE ORIGINS TO THE RENAISSANCE

These teaching modules are based on the period approach. They give the students an overview of two major historical periods in the development of literature in English: “From the Origins to the Middle Ages” (MODULE B) and “The Renaissance” (MODULE C).

OBJECTIVES

· To become familiar with the works of some of the major writers of the period and reach an understanding of their contents.

· To get an insight into the historical and literary background of the period.

· To recognise some of the literary and stylistic techniques that are specific to the period and to build up an appreciation of how form relates to content.

· To discuss some of the issues raised in the texts and express your opinion in class.

· To be ready to apply your knowledge in an independent analysis of unfamiliar texts of the authors studied.
