A. COURSE OUTLINE – ORAL SKILLS

 

Synopsis:

 

The course is specifically designed for participants to improve their English language proficiency especially in developing listening and speaking skills. Topics covered include discussions, English pronunciation and techniques of producing public speeches such as impromptu speech, public speaking and oral presentation. Principles of oral communication and the importance of non-verbal communication will be discussed. Aspects of sound and speech production are introduced to improve intelligibility and communicability. The tasks assigned will be in the form of individual and group assignment. These activities will enhance participants’ confidence in using English for academic, professional and social purposes.

 

Objectives:

  1. To equip participants with speaking skills to enable them to understand, respond and interact appropriately.
  2. To build up confidence among participants in using English.
  3. To provide participants with the opportunity to interact in academic, professional and social situations.

 

Learning Outcomes:

 

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

 

  1. Communicate effectively in academic, professional and social situations.
  2. Deliver effective oral communication confidently using appropriate language and expressions.
  3. Demonstrate the use of non-verbal communication skills effectively in their communication.

Teaching Methodology:

Lectures, discussions, group work, role play and oral presentation.

Assessment:

1. Oral Communication Activities – discussion and role play

2. Oral Presentations – Impromptu Speech and Formal Oral Presentation

B. COURSE OUTLINE – READING SKILLS

 

Synopsis

This reading module is specially designed and intended to mold participants to become lifelong readers of English for information and pleasure. It is aimed at improving and enhancing participants’ competence in reading authentic texts, specifically featured articles and reports. The tasks assigned will be in the form of individual and group assignment that would develop techniques in reading and skills in team work and group interaction.

 

Objectives

1) To develop positive attitude towards reading in English.

2) To enhance confidence and motivation for reading in English

3) To develop various comprehension and vocabulary techniques needed in reading.
4) To provide opportunities to develop generic skills in communication and teamwork.

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

 

1) Read authentic texts efficiently and confidently

2) Comprehend reading texts using appropriate techniques

3) Communicate and work in a team through reading

C. COURSE OUTLINE - REFLECTIVE WRITING SKILL

Synopsis

This course is designed for all levels and the techniques used are devised to develop participants ease with the written word. It is not about grammar and spelling but about enabling participants to get to know the most interesting person they have ever met- themselves! The course will cover three components of reflective writing i.e. the technical / academic, social, and individual components.

 

Objectives

1) To assist participants to look back on their experience and determine the meaning and the significance of it to their life

2) To develop the reflective writing style among participants

 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

1) Appreciate the importance of reflection

2) Write using the reflective writing style effectively

3) Develop confidence in learning

Lectures, group discussion and pair work

Assessment

Learning log, Personal Reflective Writing , group reflection, attendance & participation

 

D. DIGITAL LANGUAGE LABORATORY SESSION

The Digital Language Laboratories are situated at UTM Block D05 and D06, Level 1. These labs are equipped with state-of-the art technology, equipment and software. At present, UTM Digital Language Laboratories are among the most sophisticated language labs in Malaysia. These labs provide conducive language teaching and learning environments for students.

 

Learning Facilities:

The labs are equipped with the following Sanako Learning System:

 

· Live-learning solution — upgraded from traditional language labs to state-of-the art PC-based multimedia suites

· Teacher-friendly software — puts teachers at the center of live interaction for cross-curricular teaching using multimedia facilities, Internet resources and classroom management tools.

· Classroom management — helps teachers prepare for, manage and teach in an ICT environment

· Conducive self-access language learning environment— allows students to practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

 

 

Other Facilities:

All five Digital Language Laboratories are equipped with:

 

1. Thirty-six computers which are linked to the Internet to create an effective and efficient environment for both teaching and learning, and for research purposes.

2. Computer Networking which enables interactive communication between teachers and students.

3. Interactive Whiteboard which enables teacher to control the teacher’s PC entirely from the whiteboard.

4. Logitech Web Camera which enables teachers and students to capture real-life presentations and discussions for record keeping.

5. Printers which enable students to print their language learning activities.

MY LinE is an online Resource for Learning in English. It is a service that offers resources for self-access language learning covering study skills, academic reading, writing and listening, grammar and other resources for learning in English. The service allows learners to choose what they want to learn at their own pace.
