Suggest the arguments for and against euthanasia.

The case of euthanasia and assisted suicide has recently become the focus of public attention. It covers serious moral issues and goes against both legislation of many countries and ethic standards of medical practice.

Euthanasia is an intentional killing by act of dependent human being for his/her benefit. Assisted suicide is an act when someone provides an individual with the information and means. Sometimes it involves the use of a machine.

According to world statistics many of physicians help their terminally ill patients to “leave for a better world”. They explain such actions by having a strong wish to facilitate someone’s sufferings. Euthanasia activists often claim that without such “help” people will be forced to endure unbearable pain and agony. For some seniors or people who lost their ability to execute mundane daily activities or whose physical or mental faculties are reduced greatly, euthanasia can release from meaningless existence.

On the other hand, proponents of euthanasia exploit the natural fear people have of suffering and dying. They often use euphemisms because the use of accurate, descriptive language would make its chilling reality too obvious. They don’t realize that legalized euthanasia can lead to tremendous abuse.

To wrap it up, I would like to say that it’s rather a challenging issue and remains controversial.

14. What contributes more to longevity of a human organism: genes or good care?

Science and medical development can prolong our lifespan. The world statistics show that an average age has grown. Nowadays we can watch the long life revolution. It’s becoming commonplace to reach the age of 100. Conventional wisdom runs that health deteriorates into extreme old age, still currently the number of centenarians is challenging this view. They stay healthy and in the command of their faculties both physical and mental. They don’t suffer from dementia or other disorders of the brain. It’s hard to believe, still it’s a fact.

The scientists who conducted the study discovered some ways how to rich ripe old age and stay healthier.

ü Firstly, it’s much-needed to have the ability to bounce back from life’s crises. Stress affects the human organism negatively. It can lead to gastric problems, sleeping difficulties, mental disorders and other serious diseases.

ü Secondly, it’s relevant to lead a proactive lifestyle. Doing sport, for example, benefits the organism.

The endorphins released when you exercise will reduce stress, calm you down and help to prevent anxiety. The adrenalin can give you extra short-term energy and help fire you up when you are feeling depressed. It also increases your long-term stamina and ability to cope with everyday life. Your body shape will improve. Aerobic exercise can help reduced weight by burning extra calories. In addition, it improves your posture and the texture of your skin, lessens mood swings and depression, helps to prevent arthritis, joint problems and other illnesses. You will look and feel great.

ü Thirdly, well-balanced meal and steering clear of bad habits are of survival value.

I’m positive that longevity depends on good care only. Everyone should strive to stay in robust health. Conventional wisdom runs that health is better than wealth.

15. How does the rise of longevity change our lives and careers?

Science and medical development can prolong our lifespan. The world statistics show that an average age has grown. Nowadays we can watch the long life revolution. It’s becoming commonplace to reach the age of 100. Conventional wisdom runs that health deteriorates into extreme old age, still currently the number of centenarians is challenging this view. They stay healthy and in the command of their faculties both physical and mental. They don’t suffer from dementia or other disorders of the brain. It’s hard to believe, still it’s a fact.

The trend to earlier retirement doesn’t make sense anymore because we are living so much longer and remaining healthy. It gives us new opportunities. Women can start careers and postpone having children in their early thirties. All of us should be planning to have not just one job for life but several. We can afford it due to extending and renewing our skills continuously.

That’s why age discrimination should die out. Then employees will have to become more open-minded about recruiting people from different walks of life.
