PRESENT TENSES REVIEW

REVISION OF IRREGULAR PAST TENSE

 

Read this passage from Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome and give the correct past form of the verbs in brackets.

 

It ________ (cast) a gloom over the boat, there being no mustard. We ________ (eat) our beef in silence. Existence ________ (seem) hollow and uninteresting. We ________ (think) of the happy days of childhood, and ________ (sigh). We ________ (brighten) up a bit, however, over the apple-tart, and, when George ________ (draw) out a tin of pine-apple from the bottom of the hamper, and ________ (roll) it into the middle of the boat, we ________ (feel) that life ________ (be) worth living after all.

 

We are very fond of pine-apples, all three of us. We ________ (look) at the picture on the tin; we ________ (think) of the juice. We ________ (smile) at one another, and Harris ________ (get) a spoon ready.

 

Then we ________ (look) for the knife to open the tin with. We ________ (turn) out everything in the hamper. We ________ (turn) out the bags. We ________ (pull) up the boards at the bottom of the boat. We ________ (take) everything out on to the bank and ________ (shake) it. There ________ (be) no tin-opener to be found.

 

Then Harris ________ (try) to open the tin with a pocket-knife, and ________ (break) the blade and ________ (cut) himself badly; and George ________ (try) a pair of scissors, and the scissors ________ (fly) up, and nearly ________ (put) his eye out. While they ________ (dress) their wounds, I (try) to make a hole in the thing with the spiky end of the hitcher, and the hitcher ________ (slip) and ________ (jerk) me out between the boat and the bank into two feet of muddy water, and the tin ________ (roll) over, uninjured, and ________ (break) a tea cup.

 

Then we all ________ (get) mad. We ________ (take) that tin out on the bank, and Harris ________ (go) up into a field and ________ (get) a big sharp stone, and I ________ (go) back into the boat and ________ (bring) out the mast, and George ________ (hold) the tin and Harris ________ (hold) the sharp end of his stone against the top of it, and I ________ (take) the mast and ________ (poise) it high up in the air, and ________ (gather) up all my strength and ________ (bring) it down.

 

It was George's straw hat that ________ (save) his life that day.... Harris ________ (get) off with merely a flesh wound....

 

As for the tin...

 

There ________ (be) one great dent across the top that ________ (have) the appearance of a mocking grin, and it ________ (drive) us furious, so that Harris ________ (rush) at the thing, and ________ (catch) it up, and ________ (fling) it far out into the middle of the river, and as it ________ (sink) we ________ (hurl) our curses at it, and we ________ (get) into the boat and ________ (row) away from the spot...

Give the correct forms of the present continuous and simple present in the following sentences:
