NICE&DWC-16-042 Zhongshan (* China) 01/01-02/28 AGRI, ENVI 4 vols. (3 int.)

Organized together with Dream Walker China (DWC)since2014 (2nd times in this place). DWC is a NGO established in 2013 that believes everyone can make positive contribution and personal/ global development through international voluntary service and sustainable change-making actions. Grand Windmill Farm is an organic farm with many farm animals such as mules, ponies, pigs, turkeys, rabbits and dogs aiming to reconnect urban dwellers to nature and to promote a healthy, sustainable lifestyle.

W: Sustainable Farming and Animal Sanctuary. 1) Farming and harvesting, packaging herbs, fruits and vegetables. 2) Caring of farm animals (feeding, grooming, exercise, etc.) 3) Helping with daily operation and general maintenance of the farm 4) Other duties assigned by the farm staff.

A: Simple and basic accommodation is provided in the farm. Beddings are also available. Meals will be cooked by volunteers by turns.

L: Southern district of Zhongshan city which is easily accessible from Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Macau and Zhuhai via various land and sea. By ferry 90min, by bus 180 min. to Hong Kong.

T: Guangzhou. You need to arrive at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport or Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport by 14:00 on the first day and can leave there noon on the last day.)

Organized together with Friendship Foundation Nepal (FFN) since 2015 as the post disaster projects https://www.facebook.com/walkwithnepal. Nepal was hit by a strong earthquake on 2015/04/25 where 8,700 people died, 17,000 people were injured, 500,000 houses were fully destroyed and 800,000 kids cannot go to school. FFN has projects in Daman since 2012 where farming is the main industry, but youth are moving to urban areas searching their jobs, so aging of population is getting a serious problem. Then, 98% of the houses were damaged by the earthquake, so we are also afraid of villagers’ mental health.

W: Reconstructing the community center, mental-care of the children in the school by playing and sporting together and education of disaster prevention. Through communicating with villagers, this project supports the challenges of villagers’ community which confront damages of the earthquake.

S: Post disaster rehabilitation. Bring some info.!

A: Simple communal room of the school. You need to bring a sleeping bag. Meals will be cooked by volunteers by turns. Possibly, we can have home stay in the local community for 1-2 nights.

L: Daman is a small village situated at an altitude of 2,320 meters and 100 km southwest of Kathmandu.

T: You need to arrive at Kathmandu airport by 09:00 of the first day and can leave there from 18:00 on the last day. Volunteers will travel together to Daman by bus (it takes a bit more than 4 hours).

LA: Short walk to local hilltop Patal, visiting neighboring villages and temples, walk to Markhu with Himalayan panorama, Historical Chitlang palace, to chitwan national park (150 km from Palung)

SR: Strong motivation to join rehabilitation. No smoking, no alcohol. You can join the project shorter or longer (1 week – 6 months) finishing on any Sunday while the starting date should be chosen from one of the above dates. NICE-16-006 Kurikoma (Miyagi) 01/29-02/07 MANU 8 vols. (4 int.)

Organized together with Kurikoma Plateau Nature School (KPNS) since 2006. KPNS provide various nature-oriented courses, eco-tour, kids programs and independence support of the students who have difficult backgrounds. In the winter season, 2 meters of snow is piled up in Kurikoma, tourists is decreased due to the influence of snow. However they want to activate the town through a snow sculpture and international volunteer power.

W: We will do the various works needed in the KPNS and area such as lowering the snow and making the firewood using scrap wood. It will be physically hard. We will also build the snow statue with the youth in KPNS.

L: Center of Tohoku area, north part of Japan. It is specified for the quasi-national park and you can enjoy the beech wood and the alpine plant in all seasons. Very cold in Feb & Mar.

T: Tokyo (3 hours by bullet train or 9 hours by bus). You need to arrive at Narita airport by 07:30 on the first day and can leave there after 20:00 on the last day.)

LA: Exchange parties, excursion, etc.

SR: Motivation to actively work in the cold area and with youth! There’ll be no camp leader while we will have a local coordinator. No vegetarian and cigarette smokers.

NICE-16-010 Ozuchi 2 (Ishikawa) 02/07-02/20 MANU, EDU 6 vols. (3 int.)

Organized together with Shizentaiken Ozuchi Murasince 2013, founded by local people to keep the original landscape. There were 140 inhabitants with 20 houses in 1916, but now no people live there! Still 10 houses are remained and the area was designated as Nation's Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. We will try to improve the situation of the village by young voluntary power. The workcamp last year did great job to revive the stone wall made about 100 years ago!

W: We will do various work to activate the area and success their culture. Main work is shoveling and removing snow from the roofs of traditional houses, but possibly also visit elementary school for international exchange and do some other work for the community.

L: The southwest part of Ishikawa prefecture. Ozuchi village is surrounded by mountains, so very isolated, but beautiful place. Charcoal making was main industry.

T: Osaka (Kansai) airport (3.5 hours by express train). From Tokyo, 5 hours by express train/ 8 hours by highway bus (For Narita airport, you need to arrive by 13th afternoon/ can leave there after 24th noon.)

LA: Exchange parties with local people etc.

SR: High motivation to work hard and simple life in the isolated area and respect to the local culture and way of the local organization! Speaking Japanese language is welcomed!

NICE&GV4GF-16-013 Pani S1 (* Sri Lanka) 02/14-02/27 AGRI 14 vols. (6 int.)

Organized together with Green Volunteers for Green Future (GV4GF)since2012 (since 2013 in this place). GV4GF is a NGO to promote voluntary service, environmental protection and improve rural life. Paniyankadawala is located in the North Central province. In this area, people depend on paddy farming and besides that, home gardening and other small scale crops are planting because for next 8 months, they cannot grow any crops. So, the workcamps try to empower those economically disadvantaged people.

W: We will help poor farming families by joining their agricultural activities, planting, weeding, harvesting, putting fertilizers, etc. We will also do some activities with the women’s group, youth and children. At the last dinner, we will prepare our countrys’ food and do some cultural activities too.

S: Study and visit for the history of agriculture and hydro civilization existed more than 2,000 years ago

A: Village house. Meals will be cooked by the host family and a pillow with a case and coverlet will be provided while you still need to bring a sheet.

L: 18km from Anuradhapura (Sri Lankan first kingdom established 2,600 years ago) and 300 km from Colombo (7 hours by bus). Raining season is from the mid Sep. to the early Jan.

NICE-16-016 Kurogi 2 (Fukuoka) 02/18-03/08 ENVI, AGRI 7 vols. (5 int.)

Organized together with Sanson-Juku since 2008 (starting with 80 days workcamps and then, did the short term workcamps after a few years). They maintain the forest and rice fields bythe exchange programs between cities and the country sidesince 1994. In spite of the town’s natural heritage, depopulation (especially of youth) is a serious problem here similarly to many other parts of the country side in Japan. We aim to help with nature conservation and to activate the area through workcamps.

W: We will make the footpath in the forest park. We will work in the forests doing activities such as helping mushroom farm and cutting bushes in maintenance of the forest by which we can contribute to nature conservation through global voluntary power.

L: Southern part of the Fukuoka prefecture. The Kurogi town is 135,49 km2. There are so many tee trees and terraced paddy fields.

T: Fukuoka airport (3 hours by express train. You need to arrive by 11:00 on Feb. 18th and leave there after 15:00 on Mar. 08th). From Osaka, 6 hours by bullet train and 12 hours by midnight bus (you need to arrive at Kansai airport by 19:00 on Feb. 17th and leave there from 12:00 on March 9th)

NICE&GV4GF-16-018 Gala S1 (* Sri Lanka) 02/28-03/12 AGRI, RENO 14 vols. (6 int.)

Organized together with Green Volunteers for Green Future (GV4GF)since2012 (since 2014 in this place). GV4GF is a NGO to promote voluntary service, environmental protection and improve rural life. Galaha is located at 954 m above sea level. This area was used for tea plantation by British people some of which are still operating with tea factories. The camp place was a former training center, but the funds were stopped 3 years ago, so we’d like to rehabilitate Organic Farming Training Center.

W: We will help chemical free/ organic farming such as maintaining the nursery, weeding and making beds, putting fertilizer, making compost pits, planting seed and plants, etc. We will also do some activities with the women’s group, youth and children. We will cook our countries’ food in the last dinner.

S: Study and visit for the history of agriculture and hydro civilization existed more than 2,000 years ago

A: Training center. Meals will be cooked by the host family and a pillow with a case and coverlet will be provided while you still need to bring a sleeping bag or a sheet. Washing machine may be available.

L: 135 km from Colombo and 18km from Kandy, Sri Lanka’s last kingdom and the world heritage. This area consists of mix culture, Sinhala, south Indian Tamils as well as moors also living there.

T: Colombo - You need to arrive at Katunayake Bandaranayake International Airport by the end of the day before the first day and can leave there after the midnight of the last day. 6 hours by bus to the site.

LA: Visit to the ancient city, monuments, meditation center, temples and tea plantations/ tea factory etc You can taste lot of local and south Indian foods with organic vegetable and fruits!

NICE-16-019 Iwami-ginzan 1 (Shimane) 02/29-03/12 ENVI, EDU 8 vols. (4 int.)

Organized with Organization of Green and Water (OGW) since 2007. OGW was established in 1992 to advocate the importance of prairies and forests in our ecosystem. Iwami Ginzan, a silver mine, was registered as a World Heritage site in 2007. However, the recent lack of maintenance of satoyama forests has caused the unwanted spread of bamboo forests which could destroy stone walls and degrade the scenery. In the last workcamp cut down bamboo trees and had international events for local people.

W:We will undertake various kinds of work such as maintenance of the bamboo forest around the Iwami Ginzan (cutting down trees and converting into chips), cutting grasses in the local mountain to conserve biodiversity, preparing the local art event held at Iwami Ginzan, and visiting elementary schools to organize classes for international interact.

L: About 250 km north west of Osaka. Near the Sea of Japan

T: Osaka (from Osaka to Shimane, 9 hours by midnight bus. You need to arrive at Kansai airport by 18:00 one day before the first day and can leave there after 15:00 one day after the last day). From Tokyo, 6 hours by Shinkansen or 12 hours by midnight bus.

LA: Visiting the historical sites, exchange party, sports, mingling with the elders at the nursing home, etc.

NICE-16-022 Ikata (Ehime) 03/02-03/19 AGRI 12 vols. (6 int.)

Organized together with Kikuya Community Group (KCG), formed by the local young people to think of the future of their small village, since 2008. Ikata is famous for oranges farming, but has been facing depopulation, lack of workers and aging society since most of young people leave the town. So, the number of abandoned orange farms is increasing and the town is losing its tradition, life, custom and scenery. KCG strongly hopes to host vols. to work together to animate the town and revive the farms.

W: We will help orange farming such as harvesting, taking care of trees, cutting grass etc.We will separate into 5-6 groups to help different farms. Work is physically hard from early morning to evening. We will also visit school to organize class for international interact.

A: Old traditional house. CV.

L: In the edge of Sata Peninsula, surrounded by the sea, so fishing is also famous. There are only 30 houses in this community. The climate is relatively warm though it can be cold in winter.

T: Matsuyama (2.5 hours by bus). From Tokyo, 12-13 hours by highway bus.

NICE-16-023 Koshi (Fukuoka) 03/05-03/31 FEST, KIDS 9 vols. (6 int.)

Organized together with “Kodomo-Art” since 2004. Kodomo art, Society of Children's Theater Works and Community Development, was founded in 1972. They have held the international child art festival for several years. They want to activate this area through art and cultural promotion in the future for kids and build the fruitful network of a child and a cultural art organization. We aim to involve local people to promote global understanding, friendship and solidarity through this festival.

W:We will help toprepare the festival, such as site management, decoration and promotion to local kids through visiting the kindergarten and the nursery schools. We will also work during the festival (do funny activities and performance for kids, reception, carry the materials for drama and clean up etc ).

NICE-16-024 Dagan (* Malaysia) 03/07-03/21 ENVI, MANU 15 vols. (5 int.)

Organized together with Rh. Dagan Long House since 2008. Iban tribe, the indigenous people in a tropical Sarawak state, have been living in a traditional way with the nature. Their traditional way of life became endangered as the local young people started to move to the city looking for jobs. In this workcamp, we will stay at the Rumah.Dagan Long House and learn about the traditional wisdom for them and revitalize the village!!

W: We will maintain the roads, the footpath and the waterway with concrete as there are frequent landslides, share with the local people about how to sort garbage out since the village is quite far away from the city and does not have a proper garbage collecting system.

A: Home stay at the Long House, bathing in the small stream nearby! You will need to help them with some household chores. SBN. MP

L: 1 hour by car from the nearest town. Iban tribe owns its unique culture like enjoy drinking!! They bathe and wash dishes in the nearby river. Fresh chicken, fish and vegetable are scrumptious.

T: Kuching (you need to arrive by the end of one day before the first day and can leave after the midnight of the last day.)

LA: Jungle trekking, learning Iban language, exchange program, visiting local schools, etc.

NICE&PYC-16-028 Vang Vieng 1 (* Laos) 03/13-03/26 CONS, EDU 15 vols. (5 Asian)

Organized together with Phoudindaeng Youth Center (PYC) since 2009. PYC was established by AVAN (network of individuals who has done voluntary service for one year in Japan) and KNCU to work for rural development in Van Vieng by running school bus and English classes, construction of the library and skill training. We aim that local youth can have sustainable life by their own responsibilities! PYC is run by Lao youth and the leader joined JAVS (Japan-ASEAN 3 months workcamp) in Japan in 2015!

W: We will 1) construct a new community center in the Phonsung village where we have been working since last year, 2) do cultural exchange/ environmental education activities with local youth in the village and Phoudindaeng Youth Center and 3) do some other work needed in the School/ the Center..

NICE-16-026 Akame 3 (Mie) 03/14-03/28 ENVI, ELDE 10 vols. (5 int.)

Organized with "Akame no Mori wo Sodateru kai", a local environmental NPO for conservation of forest since 1999. Being located near from 2 big cities Osaka and Nagoya, there were some plans to build a golf field and waste disposal site, but local people have stopped them by "Woods Trust" movement. They founded this group in 1996 to collect donations to buy and protect lands, to own a eco-resort hotel to enjoy nature, to maintain forests, to create a pond for dragonflies, to host national copse meeting, etc.

W: We will cut down trees in the forest and carry them out. We sometimes need to use blades and machineries with lecture how to use. Work is quite hard from morning to eveningeven in rain if it’s not so heavy. Sometimes, we may have exchange with mentally challenged children who are working here.

A: Eco-resort Akameno-mori (Log house). CV.

L: About 60 km east of Osaka. There are famous falls nearby many hikers visit.

T: Osaka or Nagoya (1 hour by train from both. You need to arrive at Kansai int. airport by 10:00 on the first day and can leave there after 19:00 on the last day)

NICE&GV4GF-16-029 Aana S1 (* Sri Lanka) 03/17-03/30 CULT 10 vols. (4 int.)

Organized together with Green Volunteers for Green Future (GV4GF)since2012 (first time in this place!). GV4GF is a NGO to promote voluntary service, environmental protection and improve rural life. Aanamaduwa is a poor, rural village located at a dry area and the main income come from agriculture. Farming is done only in the rainy season (Sep.-Jan). Beside farmers, a group named “Another Cast” make only clay pots. Every April locals celebrate a new-year festival and use new clay pots for cooking.

W: We will help the families to make their clay pots. We will also do some activities with the women’s group, youth and children. We will cook our countries’ food in the last dinner. We can experience some preparations for New Year festival.

S: Sharing knowledge and skills about pot making as well as histories of Sri Lanka and your countries

L: 40km from Chilaw that is the nerest city and one of the main fishing harbors. 120 km from Colombo.

NICE-16-030 Minamata (Kumamoto) 03/18-03/31 ENVI 14 vols. (7 int.)

Organized together with Minamata International Friendship Association (MIFA) since 1992. Though there was a big tragedy of public pollution 40 years ago, it’s completely safe now and Minamata is pioneering to be ecological town by distinguishing garbage into 21 categories, etc. The workcamps have been creating a forest on the reclaimed land to bear new lives as a symbol of revival, with strong wish of the patients as well as doing various community works to activate local communities.

W: We will mainly work for renovation of the bamboo gate in Eco House and making bamboo charcoals.We alsojoin and support international festival in Minamata. We will cook your international dishes by ourselves in this event. We will sell that dishes to local people and enhance the mood in this event etc.

L:South west in Kyushu islands. People are cheerful and many of man like to drink sake!! If lucky, you could enjoy parties under cherry flowers!

Organized together with Local groupsince 2012, a giant earthquake occurred in the eastern part of Japan on March 11th, causing unprecedented damage. 80% of the houses have gotten damaged by the earthquake in Rikuzentakata, and so many people still have to live in the temporary house. Kids could not enjoy the school playground because there are so many temporary houses. So we would like to give the chance for Kids to enjoy the outdoor activates in their vacation.

W: We will help out and live together with kids in the Ski/Snowboard Kids camp supporting ski/snowboard activities and sharing your culture. We will encourage the kid’s independence and creativity by letting them plan the schedule, so you will need to respect their ideas!

L: South east edge of Iwate prefecture (very near from Miyagi). Forestry, agriculture and fishing are used to be the main industry though they were severely damaged and may take several years to be rehabilitated.

NICE-16-037 Kuromatsunai 1 (Hokkaido) 04/21-04/30 ENVI 8 vols. (5 int.)

Organized together with Buna-no-mori Shizen Gakko (nature school with beech forests) since 2003 (since for this work). BSG was started in 1998 to promote ecological education for kids and run various kinds of kids programs. They have started to create an organic, community farm where various kinds of people can gather and heal their bodies and mind. They are planting berries and vegetables and creating biotope along a stream in 20ha of the land and need a lot of voluntary power to develop!

W: We will mainly help to develop the farm and the biotopeby cutting bamboo and other glasses, digging the soils, etc.). We will also help to maintain the nature school (e.g., cutting glasses, prepare the camp site) as well as to run their “Open School” program where families and adults will enjoy the nature.

NICE&MCE-16-034 G. Mongolia (* Mongolia) 04/24-05/07 ENVI 17 vols. (5 int.)

Organized together with MCE (Mongolian workCamps Exchange) since 2002. Before 1990, the forests were covered with 10% of land, but 7% today, caused by cutting trees without any controls and forest fire. There are increasing activities by some organizations to plant trees but it takes a long time here to grow trees and the current and water level of river has been decreased. So we should also join this movement and summer workcamps of MCE keep watering, so the forests have been grown quite well.

W: We will plant trees in MCE orphanage project site by digging holes, planting trees and watering the plants. May is the best and only season to plant trees in Mongolia. We may also visit the orphanage, World Tanabata Action, plant vegetables in the orphanage farm, etc. depending on the situation.

S: The future plan of international workcamps in Mongolia and Greening Asia. Bring some info.!

L: Buhug river, located 45km far from Ulaanbaatar. The temperature will be about 10-20 C, but be careful sometimes weather will be changed lot. Sunny, sometimes rainy and windy.

Organized together with Green Volunteers for Green Future (GV4GF)since2012 (since 2013 in this place). GV4GF is a NGO to promote voluntary service, environmental protection and improve rural life. Paniyankadawala is located in the North Central province. In this area, people depend on paddy farming and besides that, home gardening and other small scale crops are planting because for next 8 months, they cannot grow any crops. Some families are making clay bricks for their survivals.

W: We will join poor farming families by planting, weeding, harvesting, putting fertilizers, etc. as well as small scale brick making. We will also do some activities with the women’s group, youth and children. At the last dinner, we will prepare our countrys’ food and do some cultural activities too.

S: Study and visit for the history of agriculture and hydro civilization existed more than 2,000 years ago

A: Village house. Meals will be cooked by the host family and a pillow with a case and coverlet will be provided while you still need to bring a sheet.

Organized together with Green Volunteers for Green Future (GV4GF)since2012 (since 2014 in this place). GV4GF is a NGO to promote voluntary service, environmental protection and improve rural life. Dunhinna is a very traditional village and former tea plantation area. The camp place called Gami Seva Sevana, mean is shelter to villegers, was a former training center and three years ago funds are totally stopped. We are going to establish a plant nursery to replanting.

W: We will help to do some planting work with experiencing chemical free/ organic farming. Collecting seeds and plants from forest, potting, making composts. We will also help cultural activities and do activities with women’s group, youths and children. We will cook our countries’ food in the last dinner.

S: We can hear lots of historical stories from villagers about area and nature.

Aanamaduwa is a poor and a rural village. To commemorate the World Environmental Day on June 05th, we are planning to launch some tree planting, awareness rising and cleaning programs with villagers and youths since environmental issue is important anywhere in the world including Sri Lanka!

W: We will join with local community to replant trees, make awareness campaigns, do cleaning activities as well as sharing experiences with local communities. We will also participate in the events organized by the local administration authorities too.

NICE-16-040 Maki 1 (Nagano) 06/15-06/26 AGRI, MANU 8 vols. (4 int.)

Organized together with Maki Farm of Kyodo Gakusha (KG)since 2000. KG is a NPO running 5organic farming communities in Japan where people with various backgrounds such as mentally disadvantaged, those who want to learn farming, etc. in order to change our society from competitive to cooperative. Maki Farm has 5-10 members and is located in a very isolated area (not accessible for cars and we have to walk 4 km in the mountains), so once it became an abandon village in 1970s.

W: We will help their organic farming (weeding in rice and vegetable fields, planting vegetables, taking care of goats and chicken) and also carry the things from the town, renovate the trails, help their house work, etc. Be ready to work for quite a long time (05:30-18:00 with some brakes) and hard.

S: Similar type of communities in each country and their networking. Bringsome info.!

L: Very isolated, but beautiful place near “Japanese Northern Alps”. About 900 meters asl. There are something remained here that most of Japanese areas have lost in modernization.

T: Tokyo (4 hours by express train or 6-8 hours by bus and train. You need to arrive at Narita airport by 04:00 a.m. on Jun. 15th and can leave there after 24:00 on Jun. 26th.)

LA: Visit to the elementary school, foot ball and baseball (optional), exchange party, etc.

Organized together with Dream Walker China (DWC)since2014 (2nd times in this place). DWC is a NGO established in 2013 that believes everyone can make positive contribution and personal/ global development through international voluntary service and sustainable change-making actions. Fuzhou city has a long history of rich cultural heritage but today’s modern society where many products are mass-produced by machines, the art of practicing traditional craftsmanship faces the brink of extinction.

W: We will 1) observe and learn Chinese art and culture, such as calligraphy, carving and paper cutting, 2) organize a charity sales of the local and international art & cultural products towards the end of the workcamp and 3) assist the daily work of the school or the temple

S: Change-making stories/ ideas on arts and cultural heritage preservation and/or left-behind children issues whether they are from your country or from others

A: School or a Buddhist temple. Simple meals will be provided three times a day at the cafeteria within the school or the temple. Temple serves only vegetarian food.

L: Jiangxi. Zhao Shu Chong Micro Public Service Youth Volunteer Association is a registered NPO formed by Univ. & high school volunteers that also care “left-behind children”.
