The country I live in

Founded in the 12th century, the Principality of Moscovy, was able to emerge from over 200 years of Mongol domination (13th-15th centuries) and to gradually conquer and absorb surrounding principalities. In the early 17th century, a new Romanov Dynasty continued this policy of expansion across Siberia to the Pacific. Under Peter I (ruled (1682-1725), hegemony was extended to the Baltic Sea and the country was renamed the Russian Empire. During the 19th century, more territorial acquisitions were made in Europe and Asia.

Repeated devastating defeats of the Russian army in World War I led to widespread rioting in the major cities of the Russian Empire and to the overthrow in 1917 of the imperial household. The Communist under V.I Lenin seized the power and formed the USSR. Since December 1991 when the USSR was splintered into 15 independent republics, Russia has struggled in its efforts to build a democratic political system and market economy to replace the strict social, political and economic controls of the Communist period. The new achievements have raised business and investor confidence in Russia’s economic prospects. Nevertheless, serious problems persist. The problems include a weak bank system, a poor business climate that discourages both domestic and foreign investors, corruption, and widespread lack of trust in institutions.

The chief of the state is President representig an executive branch with the head of the government who is Premier, the Cabinet that consists of the Ministries of the Government composed of the premier and his deputy, ministers and selected other individuals – all are appointed by the president. There is also a presidential Administration that provides staff and policy support to the president, drafts, presidential decrees, and coordinates policy among government agencies; a Security Council also reports directly to the President. President is elected by popular vote for a four-year term.

The legislative branch is bicameral Federal Assembly (Federalnoye Sobraniye) that consists of the Federation Council and the State Duma. The judicial branch is represented by Constitutional Court, supreme Court, superior Court of Arbitration, judges for all courts which are appointed for life by the Federal Council on the recommendation of the president.

Russia, Russia,

My land so lovely and so free.

Russia, Russia,

The fairest land a man can see!

When roaming Moscow’s woods that glisten

At dawn amid the new-mown hay

To nature’s song of love I listen,

A song to Russia’s bright new day.

When dawn first shines on the horizon,

To touch the woods with autumn’s glow,

I hear the birch, as in my childhood, She whispers singing soft and low.

When down the Volga I go sailing,

And seagulls sail the sky above, I hear a song of joy unfailing

To those green banks, the land I love.

I wave to those high hills a greeting,

To fields and forests on the shore,

I hear a lovely song go fleeting

That I shall sing for evermore.

When over bright steel rails I thunder,

And sweep thro’ swaying fields of corn,

I see the stars gaze down in wonder

At this great land where I was born.

I hear those voices all around me,

Your beauty, land of mine, they praise,

I know your spell, great Russia, binds me,

Enchanted at my land I gaze.
