Ekaterinburg. My native city. It’s problems

Each city has its starting point, which defines its destiny. Ekaterinburg is the city with an outstanding starting point, the city of happy lot. Established by the decree of Peter the Great, Russian reformer, the city itself came to be the center of reforms. Its favourable geographical position on the border of Europe and Asia, “amidst the Ural works”, upon the big trade rout stretching from the West to the East, facilitated the dynamic development of the manufacturing town. The present Ekaterinburg is a developing industrial and business megapolis, cultural and educational center of international importance. A harmonious fusion of styles and architectural compositions of the past epochs, which impart unique and original look to the city, represent the image of Ekaterinburg.

Pollution of our city is a great problem nowadays. Not long ago the problem was not so serious because people lived in uncrowded area and mainly without machines. Most of rivers and lakes are polluted because with the development of civilization, the plants and factories throw much waste into the rivers and poison them. The land is also polluted, because the people break trees, leave bottles and bins on the ground. Very often people who smoke cause fires in the forests. Air pollution is a serious problem too. Now many cars appeared in the city and very often smog is in the air instead of the fresh air. We also must defend the rare animals, rare birds, not destroy the nature and we must increase the greenery.

But the main wealth of the city are the people living here. They say about the open-hearted, hospitable and strong-willed person “He has the Ural character!” Ekaterinburg is always happy to welcome the guests. Good luck! Let your impression about Ekaterinburg be bright and memorable!

Modern Ekaterinburg emblem was officially confirmed by the state Heraldry Council under support of RF President n 1995. The upper part of the escutcheon depicts a fortress that Ekaterinburg used to be. The wavy azure stripe below symbolizes the Iset river. A bear is an European symbol, a sable is an Asian one. The animals are standing behind the escutcheon guarding the city. The golden ribbon on the bottom is considered to be the capital attribute.

One foot in Europe, the other one in Asia. The possibility to find oneself on the border of Europe and Asia evokes great emotions. The Urals guides say that none of the tourists remain indifferent to this significant border line. It is the symbol of the open area, the synthesis of two civilizations, titanic scale, concentrated in one point. The geographical position of Ekaterinburg itself presupposes that the Urals’ capital should be converted into the world’s tourist center. The necessity to symbolically arrange the border ahs become obvious. On the 17 km of the Moscow Tract the construction of the cultural and historical complex “Europe-Asia” is to be started. This place, on the watershed of the river Iset and Chusovaya, is the very border line between the two continents.

If I were a guide, I would show the guests of Ekaterinburg many places of interest. First of all I’d like to invite the foreign guests to my school and show them our classrooms, the library, the Assembly hall, the Gym hall and my teachers and friends. I would show them Nineteen O Five Square, the Dam, the Historical Square, the Eternal Flame, the Lake Shartash, Kamennye Palatki – the unique geological and archeological monument. Ekaterinburg and its environments are rich in archeological and geological and nature monuments. The beauty and picturesque landscape of the Natura Park “Olenye Ruchey” (Deer Stream), situated in 100 km to the South-West of Ekaterinburg in the valley of the river Sergi, attract tourists. In the park there is the largest cave – ‘Druzhba” (Friendship).

I’d also show the Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Academic Drama Theatre, the Young Spectator’s Theatre, Musical Comedy Theatre, the State Academic Philharmonic Society, Theater Center “Volkhonka”, Ekaterinburg Municipal Puppet Theater, Mayakovsky Park of Culture and Rest, the Museum of Fine Arts and Architecture, the Regional Museum of Local Lore, the Urals State Conservatory, the Cathedrals and Churches, the Memorial – Temple-on-Blood.

On the night 16-17 July, 1918 in the cellar of the engineer Ipatiev house the Lord’s anointed Russian Emperor Nickolay the Second, his family and close people were foully murdered. The bodies of the august family were taken away on the lorry to the remote mine, burned and thrown down to the old pit (Ganina Yama). In 2000 the guiltlessly killed were glorified as strastoterptsy in the Cathedral of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. On October 23 of the same year the Holy Patriarchy Aleksey the Second visited the Urals for the first time during his patriarchate. He gave his blessing to the construction of the temple complex at Ganina Yama. The Temple-on-Blood was constructed on the place of the destroyed Ipatiev’s House, where the lives of the last Russian Emperor Nickolay the Second and his family tragically ended. The Temple was sanctified in 2003.

According to Peter’s the Great decree, in spring 1723 the construction of the first-rate plant in Russia began. The 7th (18th) of November 1723 became the birthday of the city when the first test shot of hammers was accomplished. The fortress-plant was named Ekaterinburg after the empress Ekaterina I and the Saint great Martyr Ekaterina, the patroness of mining. We shall start our walk around Ekaterinburg from the monument to the city founders. It is situated on the left bank of the Iset River, where the main Ekaterinburg highway, the Lenin Street, crosses the city dam. The monument, constructed by P. Chusovitinov, was unveiled in August, 1998, to the 275th anniversary of the city. It represents the figures of the Ekaterinburg founders, Vasiliy N. Tatischev and Willim I. Gennin. Their characters were opposite, and sometimes it seems that voluntary or not they have introduced this antithesis to the character of the city. Though there is a certain resemblance that may be traced in the portraits of these people: high foreheads, narrow faces, volitional chins, large noses.

Let us walk on the right bank of the Iset River and return to the dam. We’ll go through the geological alley, where there are lumps – the samples of the Urals rocks (iron ores, marbles, rhodonite, quartz and others) and come to the bas-relief “The birth of the city” (sculptor P. Sharlaimov). Over it there is a part of the plant wall with the tracery gates.

There are a lot of first-class restaurants, cafes, snackbars and bistros in the city with a great collection of Russian, French, Chinese, Italian and Ukrainian dishes. Elegant atmosphere, excellent interior, soft and comfortable sofas with pillows, faint light, Lounge music. Progressive cocktails and refined cuisine and interesting relations.

You can also visit some entertainment centers like Casino and various clubs and bowling centers. There is a great choice of shopping centers as well. “Flower Valley” Store will offer you wedding and present bouquets with fresh flowers and decorate banquet and jubilee halls. Today you can find here any kind of leisure and intellectual activity to your content. Are waiting for you.
