Ex. 6.Paraphrase the sentences using Complex Object.

Model 1: I expect that he works in a bank. – I expect him to workin a bank.

1. I know that she has an interest in the company. 2. I believe that she isn’t guilty. 3. I found that the job was very challenging. 4. I imagine that he works very hard. 5. We didn’t consider that he would arrive by plane. 6. I knew that they were right. 7. We expect that they will arrive soon.

 

Model 2: They reported that the plane had landed. – They reported the plane to have landed.

1. They reported that the train had already started. 2. The boys reported that the experiment had been carried out. 3. The surgeon pronounced that the patient had recovered. 4. Sam declared that the sales agent would come again some day. 5. They reported that the salaries would be paid on time. 6. The notice at the airport stated that the passengers should check in at the airport
30 minutes before take-off.

 

Model 3: He must wash the car. – I want him to wash the car.

1. You mustn’t be late for work. I don’t mean … … . 2. Claire must tidy her bedroom. I want ……. . 3. She mustn’t go to the disco. I don’t want …… . 4. They must go to school tomorrow. I intend …… . 5. He must mend his bike. I mean… . 6. I didn’t mean that you should go there immediately. 7. The patient wanted that the doctor examined him.

Model 4: I like (it) when you come to see us. – I like you to come to see us.

 

1. She hates when people lie. 2. All children like when their parents give them presents. 3. I can not bear when she says bad words.4. I can’t say that I like when you watch thrillers and soap-operas. 5. He hates when his wife talks with her friends for hours on the telephone. 6. Do you like when your guests leave your place late? 7. Nobody likes when people are late.

Model 5: She told him to do the task. – She had him do the task.

1. They forced us to sit and wait (make). 2. I hope you will tell her to sell the car (have). 3. Her parents wouldn’t give her permission to go out with boys (let). 4. She heard some strange sound and stepped aside (make). 5. The teacher told him to complete the task (have).

Model 6: She heard that he whispered something. – She heard him whisper something.

1. We heard that the actor sang a song. 2. I felt that that my face turned red. 3. I heard that he told lies.

 

Ex. 7. Practice the use of the Objective Infinitive Construction after verbs to see, to notice, to hear, to feel.

Model: – The student sang a song. – I heard himsing that song.

1. Mrs White accepted the invitation. 2. The driver apologized. 3. Peter booked the tickets. 4. The official explained how to fill in the form. 5. Mary turned off the water. 6. Tom invited his neighbours to the party. 7. Jane locked the door. 8. Sally warned Mike of the danger.

 

Ex. 8.Change the sentences so that to use Complex Subject.

Model1: It is said that he knows several oriental languages. He is said to know several oriental languages.

1. It is reported that the expedition left in June. 2. It was considered that he is one of the best pilots in the country. 3. The teacher expects that you will read an article on this subject. 4. It is reported that the police caught the criminal. 5. It is supposed that St. James park is one of the nicest parks in London. 6. It is thought that the Council is still discussing the unemployment problem.



Model 2: It appeared that she noticed him. – She appeared to notice him.

1. It seems that she has forgotten her promise. 2. It turned out that he lived in Paris. 3. It seems that nothing has changed. 4. It appeared that the charges at the hotel were reasonable. 5. It turned out that he arrived by train. 6. It happened that the young man met the famous musician in the street. 7. On the long journey it proved that he was an amusing companion.

Model 3: I am sure that they will solve the problem facing the company.

They are sure to solve the problem facing the company

1. You signed the document without reading it, which was very stupid. (It was stupid…) 2. Is it likely that he will arrive before six? (Is he…) 3. They will certainly conclude this agreement in the near future. (The agreement is certain…) 4. You may miss the beginning of the performance if you don’t hurry. (You are likely…). 5. He was the only person who believed in the results of the experiment. 6. He will be pleased when he learns the news.

 

Ex. 9. Combine the two ideas in the following into one sentence using the For-Complex after verbs as in the models given.

 

Model: You will need a taxi to take you to the airport. Ring one up! Ring upfor a taxi to takeyou to the airport!

1. Mrs Williams is looking for a baby-sitter to look after the baby on Saturday nights. She should advertise. 2. I’d like a firm to pick up my laundry every week. I’ll arrange it. 3. You need a doctor to look at your sick child. Send for one! 4. Our new furniture hasn’t been delivered yet. We are still waiting. 5. I’d like a student to give my son extra tuition in French. I’ll advertise. 6. We needed a book to prepare for exams. We are looking for it. 7. The children want the holidays to come. They are longing for them. 8. His friends want to be admitted to the club. He will ask.
