Disjunctive Questions

 

Ex. 7.Ask and answer disjunctive (tag) questions according to the model. Work in pairs. Develop your answers using the words in brackets.

Notes:

a) Negative tags generally suppose the answer will be Yes. b) Positive tags generally suppose the answer will be No.

Model:

a)I am older than you, aren’t I? You have some free time, don’t you? There is some milk in the carton, isn’t there? Your train leaves at four, doesn’t it? You don’t know the answer, do you? b) Open the windows, will/won’t you? Let me do this, will/won’t you? Don’t make any noise, will you? Let’s have a party, shall we?  

1. The teacher always gives instructions in English (Russian).

2. Your father doesn’t smoke cigarettes after dinner (at all).

3. They don’t stay in London for their summer holidays (go to Italy).

4. I often work overtime this month because I want to save up for buying a new car (a house).

5. She doesn’t go skiing in France in winter (stay at home).

6. Sam, my neighbour, usually goes fishing at the weekend (buy fresh fish).

7. As a rule she drinks black coffee in the morning (tea).

8. Mrs Bell usually has meals at home (eat out).

 

Alternative Questions

 

Ex. 8.Put alternative questions to the statements given above (Ex. 7) and give answers according to the model:

Model: Does your sister live in London or Edinburgh? – She lives in London.

Indirect Questions

 

Ex. 9.Put indirect questions to the sentences using the model. Pay particular attention to the word order.

Model: How often do trains to Edinburgh run? Do you know? / I wonder … .

I wonder how often trains to Edinburgh run.

1. When does the 9.30 from King’s Cross arrive? I wonder … .

2. Is the 9.30 a very busy train? Can you find out…?

3. Is it necessary to reserve a seat? Could you inquire for me…?

4. What’s the price of a first class ticket? Will you ask…?

5. Do the trains usually arrive on time? Would you inquire…?

6. How much does a weekend-return to Edinburgh cost? I wonder…

7. When do the new train timetables come out? I’d like to know….

 

If/When clauses (when I come…, if he comes…, as soon as she comes…)

 

Ex. 10.Use the proper form of the verb:

Model: She’ll come and see you before she (leave) for London.

She’ll come and see you before she leaves for London.

1. We won’t move from here until you (come) back.

2. Don’t worry. You’ll know her when you (see) her.

3. I don’t think he will phone before he (arrive).

4. You won’t forget to lock up the house before you (go) out, will you?

5. You’ll go out when the rain (stop).

6. As soon as he (save) £ 100,000, he will retire from business.

7. After the game (be) over, let’s go home together.

8. I shall not speak to him until you (introduce) us to each other.

Ex. 11. a. Suggest your idea of completing the sentences.

b. Make up your sentences, using the following word-combinations:
