Geography (Countries and Cities)

This dialogue is a conversation between Mr. And Mrs. Gates, who have just won a travelling tour around the world. They’re suggested visiting 2 places. So they are discussing where to go.

Mrs. – Cool, it appears to me, we are going on vacation, aren’t we?

Mr. – Definitely. You know, I’ve just been to a travel agency and got these leaflets, brochures and maps. Let’s go through them. Shall we?

Mrs. – Right. There are so many countries in the world. Some you know, some you don’t. Some are near, some are far, some sound exotic like Zanzibar, ‘cause these are places in the world: Bombay, Care May, Mandaly and Baffin Bay.

Mr. – Baghdad, Leningrad, Ashkabad, Trinidad, L. A., Norway, Paraguay, Monterey, Singapore, Ecuador, Bangalor, Baltimore, these are places in the world.

Mrs. – You know, I’ve already been to many European counties such as Slovakia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany but I haven’t visited France yet. What about going there?

Mr. – Well, to my mind, it must be really interesting. By the way, you know, my editor asked me to write a report about this magnificent country. And if we go there, I can share my impressions with my readers.

Mrs. – Definitely. And as far as I know, you can Speak French, can’t you?

Mr. – Oh, I’m afraid my French is not very good.

Mrs. – Don’t be silly it’s wonderful.

Mr. – It’s terrible.

Mrs. – Don’t be silly, it’s wonderful. You speak French very well.

Mr. – No, I don’t.

Mrs. – Yes, you do.

Mr. – No, I don’t that’s not true.

Mrs. – Yes, it is. You really do speak French very well.

Mr. – Thank you. You’re very kind.

Mrs. – No, I mean it. I really mean it. You really do speak French very well.

Mr. – Thank you. Well, so we decided to visit the capital of all sweethearts, where streets are full of peaceful and romantic atmosphere. Still we have a chance to visit another country.

Mrs. – Well, France is a European country and why don’t we go to Asia. What about going to Japan to Tokyo on our vacation? How do you like it?

Mr. – I like it a lot. I love it. As far as I know. Tokyo is a city of great contrasts a real mixture of ancient and modern. No doubt there are many things to do and places to go. But can you speak Japanese?

Mrs. – Not very well. Just a little.

Mr. – But can you understand it?

Mrs. – More or less?

Mr. – Look, there are some words in Japanese. Can you translate them?

Mrs. – Let me try… Oh no, I give up. I can’t do it. Unfortunately, it’s not my native language.

Mr. – Don’t give up. Try it again.

Mrs. – I read it twice. I couldn’t understand it.

Mr. – Don’t give up. Read it again.

Mrs. – Ok. If I’m not mistaken, it means Japan is worth seeing.

Mr. – Well, we’ve made the right choice.

Mrs. – We definitely have.

My Daily Programme

This dialogue is a conversation between two girlfriends , Betty Brown and Mary White. They met in

the café and had a talk. Let’s listen to the dialogue.

- Hi! How are you?

- Fine, thanks. And how are you?

- I’m fine. It’s so good to see you.

- It’s good to see you.

- You look marvelous.

- So do you. Those are nice boots on you. Where did you get them?

- Thanks, I got them at Macy’s.

- You know, I got up so early today, at half past five. And when do you get up as a rule?

- Generally about half past six.

- Why so early?

- Because I usually catch an early train up to town.

- Do you have time for breakfast?

- I have only a cup of tea with toast for breakfast.

- Oh, I see. Do you get up yourself?

- Punctually at 6:30 in the morning the alarm – clock rings and wakes me up.

- Ok, and what do you usually do after getting out of bed?

- I put on my dressing gown and slippers and go into the bathroom, where I turn on the hot and cold taps.

- What do you do while the water’s running into the bath?

- I wash my face and neck, clean my teeth and do my hair before the looking- glass.

- And I usually get up, open the window to air the room and turn on the radio. Then I do my morning exercises to music.

- Morning exercises do people a lot of good! And then you have a bath, don’t you?

- Oh no, I prefer to have a shower.

- Cold or warm?

- I take a cold shower. What do you do after having a bath?

- I brush my clothes and shoes and then I put on my dress.

- Good, and then you go to the Institute, don’t you?

- No. While my mother is washing up, I am sweeping the floor with a broom. And after that I go to the Institute.

- Do you go to the Institute by Metro?

- No, I go there on foot. It takes me only ten minutes to get there.

- And what do you do after classes?

- When the last class is over, my friends and I have dinner. And after that we go to the laboratory to have some practice in pronunciation. And what about you?

- I usually go to the reading - room to prepare my homework there.

- Does it take you long to get home?

- Yes, sometimes on my way home I do some shopping.

- And what do you usually do in the evenings? Do you go out or stay at home?

- We generally stay at home. Once or twice a week we go to the theatre or to the pictures. We went to the pictures last night and saw a very interesting film. Occasionally we go to a dance. And how do you spend your evenings?

- I have a short rest. I usually read different books or magazines. And when the working day is over, my family get together and watch TV. I also do some housework in the evening. Then I feel tired and sleepy and go to bed.

- So do I.

- Oh, it’s getting late! I’m pressed for time!

- Oh no, please don’t go!

- But it’s getting late! Say hello to your brother. Tell him I miss him.

- I will.

- So long then.

- Bye.

Daily Programme

Household Chores

This dialogue is a conversation between two girl-friends, Mary and Alice. They like to jog together in the morning. Now they are running along the street. So the conversation begins.

-Mary, you look a bit tired.

- I’ve been preparingfor my English lesson almost the whole night through. I had to make a report on Charles Dickens's biography.

- Oh, you're always having so much homework. And for you it's simply inconceivable not to prepare. What's the matter with you today?

- I have been preparing it perfectly. Why not, if it is not difficult to me, besides I always have enough time for entertaining. For example, my friends and I are going to the pictures tonight.

- Oh, how happy you are! As for me, I have to go to the laboratory after classes today to have some practice in pronunciation. But luckily for me I have no homework to prepare for tomorrow.

- Then you have an opportunity to go somewhere when you are free from your studies.

- I'd love to. But I'll have to help Mum to do some work about the house. There's a lot of linen to be washed and ironed. Besides, two weeks have passed since I promised to bake a cake. So I'll do all these things this afternoon.

- And in our family the dirty linen is put in a linen basket and sent to the laundry. So, my housework usually includes washing up, watering the flowers and doing my room on Saturday.

- At the weekend we never do any work about the house. We like to go to a theatre or to a dance.

- Aren't there evenings in your family when you gather together round the dinner table?

- Yes, sometimes we have supper with all the members of the family present. We discuss the latest news and the most important events of the day. My brother and I tell our parents about our progress at the University.

- And in our family there's almost a tradition to watch television in the evening. Our tastes differ but most of all we prefer watching adventurous or feature films and also sport competitions.

- And what time is it, Mary?

- It's already half past seven.

- It's just the time for us to return. Oh, I'm dreaming about a cold shower and then I'll eat my favourite cornflakes with milk and strawberry.

- A cold shower. . . A good idea! But one must have strong will to do that. As for me, I prefer a warm bath.

- Oh, you simply don't know how great it is to rub yourself with the towel and to feel fresh. And then I usually brush my teeth and wash my face.

- Oh! We must hurry up because before going to the University I have to do my hair perfectly in order to impress my friends at the pictures tonight.

- And won't you have time for it in the afternoon?

- No, after classes I usually go to the reading-room to prepare my homework there.

- Oh, you're constantly studying! Well, have fun in the evening.

- You too. See you tomorrow.

- Goodbye.
