The Federal building is all the way downtown.

A: Yes, but you might not get it in time. Is there anything else I can do for you?

J: No, thanks.

A: Well, have a great trip.

Thirty-four (The media and communications) Fighting over the remote control

Lisa: Let me flip through the channels. I’m not sure what’s on tonight.

Chris: Why didn’t you buy the TV guide?

L: When I got to the store they had already sold every single copy.

C: Well, I know the sports channel is going to televise the boxing match live.

It’ll be broadcast all over the world.

L: Let’s see what else is on.

C: Wait! Go back to the news.

L: No, the news is so depressing.

C: What are you looking for?

L: A sitcom or a movie.

C: Although, sitcoms are OK,

I’d rather watch a sport event or music videos on MTV any day.

Give me the remote control.

L: No way.

C: Fine. While you watch TV all by yourself,

I’ll go read the sports section of the newspaper.

Thirty-five (Bargaining) A yard sale

Jessica: Hello! Take a look around. Everything is in good condition.

Peter: How much is this reclining chair?

J: It was a hundred, but I’ll give it to you for eighty.

P: That’s a bit much. Maybe I’ll come back this afternoon.

J: Well, a lot more people will be stopping by later.

By this afternoon I’ll probably have sold it.

P: What’s your lowest price?

J: Make me an offer.

P: I’ll give you fifty.

J: No way. I can’t go lower then seventy-five

P: How about sixty-five?

J: Fine. You’ve got yourself a deal. And come back soon.

We’ll be selling stuff every weekend.

P: Yes, maybe I will.

Thirty-six (Cultural Events) Thanksgiving

Claudia: Hi, Sandy. How was your thanksgiving?

Sandy: Wonderful. We all went to my parents’ new house.

C: Is that the one near the freeway that was built last year?

S: Yes! Anyway, the turkey was all ready when I got there.

But my favorite part is always the stuffing and the mashed potatoes.

The pumpkin pie was also fantastic, naturally, since it was made by yours truly. We really pigged out.

C: Who else was there?

S: My brother Tony. He and his friends were watching the football game.

C: Did he finally get his hair cut?

S: Yes. I was surprised.

C: Well, I went out to eat with my daughter. My oven wasn’t working.

S: That’s too bad.

C: Actually, it was quite nice. At least I didn’t have to do all the cooking.

S: Tell me, did you get your oven fixed?

C: No, not yet. It’ll be repaired next week.

Thirty-seven (Services) My car broke down

Mechanic: Good morning! What seems to be the problem?

Emily: Well, my car stopped all of a sudden, and I couldn’t get it started again.

So, I had it towed here.

M: If you leave it here, I’ll try to check it later.

E: Is there any way you could work on it right away? I’m late for work as it is.

M: Well, if you give me a minute, I’ll see what I can do.

E: Thanks so much.

M: I jump started your car and it’s running fine. But you’ll need a new battery soon.

E: Not today. I need to get to work.

M: Suit yourself. But if you don’t get a battery soon,

you’ll have the same problem again.

Thirty-eight (Music) At a nightclub

Cindy: What a great band!

Edward: Yes. The drummer was great.

C: I thought the saxophone player was outstanding.

E: You know, I could’ve been a great musician myself
