The American brain loathes the metric system.

Facts About Americans: We can’t compute the metric system.

Did you know that the United States is the only industrialized nation that does not use the metric system? If you’re American, you didn’t know this because you just ignore anything that’s not in feet, inches, or miles. If you’re foreign, you most likely already knew this because you’ve dealt with us not understanding how warm 37 degrees Celsius was, or what 30 kilometers-an-hour meant.

I remember how proud I was when I was finally able to instantly compute how far 4 kilometers was, or if 15 degrees Celsius meant I needed a jacket. My German friends, or other sassy Europeans, would no longer be able to tease me about not understanding the metric system. I sometimes wonder if the United States is just trying to be annoying by not converting to the metric system?

I mean, when you’re the only industrialized country that refuses to covert to the more common form of measurement, you can’t help but wonder if they’re doing it just to be annoying. I can’t imagine the day when the United States government announces that we would be switching to the metric system…it would be apocalyptical.

If you’re from another country, you may see America as a “bully,” or even dislike us to the point of disgust, but, before you hate, you should remember that Americans are from all over the world. We really aren’t so bad and even if you weren’t born here, you can still become an American…come live here for a year and then see if you still hate it.

I have lived in Europe, my mom isn’t even a U.S. citizen and my dad currently lives in the Middle East, but we all agree on one thing; that America is an amazing place and feel lucky to be able to call this great country “home.”
