Introduction

Phraseology as a science appeared only at the beginning of the 20th century. Until nowadays the problems about the status of phraseology, who is the founder of this discipline and plenty of problems connected with theory of this science have not been solved. To yet unsettled questions belong the vagueness of the term “phraseological unit” and the subject matter of phraseology. Unclear is the theory of equivalence. Scientific research of the above mentioned problems is being conducted. Productive enough are researches of our domestic (in particular Russian and Ukrainian) linguists. Such linguists as V.V.Vinogradov [1977], V.L.Arkhangelyskiy [1964], V.M.Mokienko [1989], V.P.Zhukov [1978], V.G.Gak [1988], L.G.Skripnik [1973], M.F.Alefirenko [1984], L.G.Avksentyev [1987] contributed a lot to the theory of phraseology. And such linguists as O.I.Smirnitskiy [1956], O.V.Kunin [1970], N.M.Amosova [1963], A.I.Alekhina [1982] investigated phraseology of English. Among western linguists Charles Bally [1961] and L.P.Smith [1959] are the most outstanding scientists dealing with the problems of phraseology.

Our attention will be concentrated on the components of phraseological units, namely those lexemes, which bear semantic connection with colour. Such lexemes are called coloronyms.

The object of investigation are those phraseological units of modern English the structure of which comprises names of colours.

The subject of investigation are semantic peculiarities of phraseological units denoting colour in the English language.

The purpose of investigation is to define the place of phraseological units containing colour component in the semantic space of the English language.

Basic tasks of research:

1. To define the influence of the meaning of coloronym on general meaning of a phraseological unit;

2. To discover semantic role of these components in the field of system connections;

3. To consider to what extent psychological interpretation of color is represented in the phraseological units.

4. To carry out the formalized analysis of semantics of phraseological units denoting colours by the construction of matrix of semantic space of these lexical units.

Research is carried out by means of componental analysis of semantics of phraseological units.

The year paper consists of introduction, two chapters, conclusions and the list of the literature used.

The first chapter deals with the theoretical issues of theory of phraseology and peculiarities of colour perception.

The second chapter presents the componental analysis of phraseological units containing coloronyms in their structure.
