In his novel Lord of the Flies_

In his novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding tells the story of a group of boys stranded on an island. There are two leaders among them: Ralph and Jack. Ralph becomes a chief after election, Jack isn't happy about that. The boy with birthmark on his face tells everybody that there is a beast on the island. Jack creates his own tribe and asks others to join it. Simon talks with the Lord of the Flies and finds out, that beast is ''not something we can touch and it exists in all people's hearts.'' In the end of the story, the millatary officer saves Ralph's life and rescues children from the island. The major characters in Lord of the Flies represent types of people in the larger world. Simon is a Christ figure, Piggy is an intellectual, Jack is a militaristic dictator and Ralph is a democratic style leader.

Simon is a Christ figure in the novel. In the Bible, Jesus at one point feeds many, many people who have come to hear him preach. In the book, Simon helps little ones to get some fruit. He helped other people like Christ does. Another similarity is that in the Bible, Christ goes onto the mountain where he has a conversation with the Devil. In the novel, Simon goes up to the mountain to find the beast. He has a conversation with it and it tells him that the beast lives in human’s souls. Another similarity in the Bible is that Christ was trying to give people a message, but nobody was listening to him and eventually he was killed. In the novel, Simon founds the truth that the beast doesn’t exist and children kill him. Perhaps the greatest similarity is that in the Bible Christ is crucified on a cross. As he dies, he raises his hands into heaven with a halo around his head. In similar fashion Simon dies. He puts his hands like a cross and halo appears on his head.

Piggy is the most intelligent boy on the island. He is smart but he is too weak to be the leader. Only Ralph recognizes him as a good person when others ignore him. A lot of times Piggy gives good ideas to Ralph, which helps them to survive or to be rescued. When novel starts Piggy and Ralph find the counch, Piggy tells Ralph to blow in it so everybody will hear it and find them. He also thinks a lot about rescue fire. He suggested that if they put more leaves it they can have more smoke. He also was only one child on the island who doesnt believe in the beast; he tells that this is unscientific.“What I mean is . . . maybe it’s only us” (56) He always was with little ones because he knows that if sombody would not look for them, they can die or harm themselfs.

Jack is like a military style dictator. There are a lot different rules in military forces. And if you break one, you will be punished. In the novel, during first assembly he suggests making a lot of strict rules and punishes for them. And when tribes separate from each other there is the scene when a boy was punished because he breaks some rules. Military force’s work is to protect and attack. In the book, Jack makes his choir to be hunters. And he also promises that he will protect and keep fire going. During the assembly when boy with birthmark tells everybody that there is a beast on the island, Jack takes the conch and tells everybody that his or her tribe should hunt and kill the beast.

Ralph is democratic style leader in novel. In the book, Ralph decides to have a vote for chief. And everybody except, choir decides to choose him. Real democratic style leader would never make his people scared. In the book, when a boy with the birthmark tells that there is a beast on the island Ralph decides to check it. But Jack makes everything bad, by saying that he would kill the beast. Ralph wants to be rescued, when everybody wants to have fun. He always thinks about the fire, and tries to make people thinking about it too. In the end of the novel “Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart” (106)

Golding has created an experiment, which creates microcosm to represent the macrocosm. Where grown ups in big world cant do anything with themselves like small kids on the island, Golding showed beast inside of us. Golding showed that everybody has potential to be evil. This book was an excellent example on how friends can easily turn against each other when you both want the same thing.
