Holidays of Great Britain.

There are a lot of holidays in Great Britain. Some of them are more popular and some less. Some of them are celebrated all over the World, but there’s the holidays that are mostly typical for the British.

Halloween

Halloween is celebrated on October the 31st. The Irish Celts began to celebrate this holiday in the 5th century BC. That day they celebrated the New Year as they had their own chronology according to the agricultural calendar. In 835 AD the Roman-Catholic Church declared that the 1st of November should be a church holy-day in honor of all saints. This day is called «All saints Day». Many years have passed since then. Some traditions disappeared for good and new ones came into being. I’m going to tell about the most popular traditions of Halloween. Of course it’s dressing into costumes. This tradition has both European and Celtic roofs. Hundred years ago the winter was an uncertain and scary season. Most people were afraid of the darkness. The short winter days were full of anxiety. There was a legend that the ghosts came back to the earthly World on Halloween and people were afraid of meeting with them. That’s why they came out of their houses, put on masks to belong to them. People put outside their homes the dishes with food to sweet talk them and prevent from going inside. The tradition «Trick or treat» was known at first as the night of mischief. Halloween was a time for all kinds of mischief. Children knock at the doors and ask for treat or even money from their neighbors. Symbols of Halloween are witches flying on broomsticks with black cats, ghosts, goblins, skeletons. Pumpkins are also a symbol of Halloween. A legend grew up about a man named Jack who was so stingy that he was not allowed into heaven when he died. Poor Jack had played pranks to the devil, so he was not allowed into hell, either.
