Call for a Post-Graduate Research Student — Research Assistant Position

 

 

Applications are invited for a joint PhD position at the Laboratory of Metamaterials of National Research University (NRU) ITMO, St. Petersburg, Russia, and the “Electromagnetic methods for MRI” group of the Imaging Division of the University Medical Center Utrecht, The Netherlands. We are seeking for a talented individual holding an M.Sc. degree in Radiophysics or Electrodynamics and having skills in antennas development and computer modeling to work and study under a joint research program related to application of metamaterials (and new prospective microwave technologies) for improvement of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technologies.

 

The applicant must possess a solid knowledge at least in one of the related disciplines, and must demonstrate excellent learning abilities. A priority will be given to applicants that have accepted or published works in referred international journals or conference proceedings. A good command of English language is preferable.

 

The winner of this call will be granted a fully paid research student - research assistant position at the Laboratory of Metamaterials (renewed each year, up to 4 years in total) and a research visitor position at the Imaging Division of the University Medical Center Utrecht within the group “Electromagnetic methods for MRI”. The research plan is to be performed within the Laboratory of Metamaterials with periodic visits (with total duration up to 24 month) to Utrecht, during which the accommodation, meals, and travel costs will be fully compensated by NRU ITMO. The prospective candidate is expected to obtain her/his PhD (Cand. Phys.-Math. Sc) degree from Utrecht University Medical Center within 4 years based on the results of this research project. It is planned that the first activities under this project will begin in May /June. 2014.

The Laboratory of Metamaterials is established under open grant competition of the Government of the Russian Federation designed to support research projects implemented by leading scientists at Russian institutions of higher education. The head of the laboratory is Dr. Pavel Belov and the research advisor of the laboratory is professor of the Australian National University Prof. Yuri Kivshar.

 

“Electromagnetic methods for MRI” group is led by Dr. Nico van den Berg, who specializes in RF transmit design and RF safety of ultra high field body MRI and the development of MR imaging for oncology.
